REVIEW | TODRICK HALL: FORBIDDEN

Todrick Hall brought his Forbidden tour to Auckland last night and came to slay. His show was equal parts musical, concert and party. All of it made for a thoroughly enjoyable performance of original music and sharp choreography with an important social message.

Todrick is a singer, songwriter, drag queen and dancer who first burst onto the scene as a semi-finalist on American Idol, but found his home on Youtube. He has released several albums and even starred in the Broadway hit Kinky Boots. His following of Toddlerz is huge, but not just because he is extremely talented. He has millions of fans because he has always been open about who he is as a person, connected with his audience and spread positivity. It was kind of surreal to see him up close – this star whose musical medleys and comedic skits I’ve watched for years.

At a time in America where societal tensions are high, he is an important voice of intersectionality for minorities and the marginalised because he is both African American and a member of the gay community. What Todrick represents more than anything is the message that you should be yourself, believe in yourself and love who you are.

His latest visual album Forbidden takes place in an upside down world where being gay is the norm, and straight people are persecuted. It’s hard to choose a favourite song from an album packed with clever and funny lyrics. I enjoyed the unapologetic attitude of B, the cute arcade theme of Play with Jade Novah, and the sass of Doll Hairs ft Shangela. However, I think Type is my best pick. Never have I heard a song that so accurately described my dating life. Todrick’s voice was phenomenal and rang out into the theatre while his talented dancers gave it their all. I loved the 50s aesthetic of Forbidden with its peak caps, full skirts with petticoats and perfectly coiffed hair. Under the apple pie exterior of the society in Forbidden are real social issues being swept under the rug and thrown in jail with a smile. Todrick’s story challenges people to empathise and think about the world they live in.

Todrick’s Forbidden tour put on a bold, exciting and an entertaining pop performance. My wig, as they say, was well and truly snatched.
